Latvia
Latvia - Is officially the Republic of Latvia. Latvia is a European Country and shares borders with Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus, Russian Federation, the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. A Latvian republic emerged after World War I, but it was annexed by the USSR in 1940 - this action was never recognized by the US and many other countries. Latvia reestablished its independence in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Latvia joined both North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union in 2004. Latvia's economy experienced Gross Domestic Product growth of more than 10% per year during 2006-07. Some believe that Latvia's flat tax is responsible for its high growth rate, but this is not universally accepted. Privatisation is mostly complete, except for some of the large state-owned utilities. Latvia has had human settlements since 9000 BC.
