Italy
Italy - Is officially known as the Italian Republic. Italy is a European Country and shares its northern border with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia and the Mediterranean Sea. Italy's two largest islands of Sicily and Sardinia are also located in the Mediterranean Sea. Benito Mussolini's alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Italy has a diversified industrial economy with roughly the same total and per capita output as France and the United Kingdom. Italy is divided into a developed industrial north, dominated by private companies, and a less-developed, welfare-dependent, agricultural south, with 20% unemployment. Excavations throughout Italy reveal a modern human presence dating back to the Palaeolithic period some 200,000 years ago
