Greece

Greece - Is officially known as the Hellenic Republic. Greece is a European Country and shares borders with Albania, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Sea of Crete and the Mediterranean Sea. Greece achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. During the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, it gradually added neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. During World War II, Greece was invaded by Italy and later occupied by Germany from 1941-1944. Greece is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy and the Olympic Games. Greece joined the European Union and was the 12th member of the European Economic and Monetary Union in 2001. Greece has a capitalist economy with the public sector accounting for about 40% of GDP and with per capita Gross Domestic Product at least 75% of the leading euro-zone economies. Tourism provides 15% of Gross Domestic Product. Greece saw the emergence of the first advanced civilizations in Europe, the Minoan civilization in Crete and the Mycenean civilization on the mainland of Greece.
