Estonia

Estonia - Is officially known as the Republic of Estonia. Estonia is a European Country and shares borders with Finland by way of the Gulf of Finland, Sweden by way of the Baltic Sea, Latvia, and the Russian Federation. After centuries of Danish, Swedish, German, and Russian rule, Estonia attained independence in 1918. Forcibly incorporated into the USSR in 1940 - an action never recognized by the US - it regained its freedom in 1991, with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Estonia, joined the European Union in 2004. Estonia has a modern market-based economy and one of the highest per capita income levels in Central Europe. The current government has pursued relatively sound fiscal policies, resulting in balanced budgets and low public debt. Although Estonia is in general resource-poor, the land still offers a large variety of smaller resources. The country has large oil shale and limestone deposits, along with forests which cover 47% of the land. The settlement of modern day Estonia began around 8500 BC, immediately after the Ice Age. Human settlement in Estonia became possible 11,000 to 13,000 years ago, when the ice from the last glacial era melted away.
