Czech Republic
Czech Republic - Is officially known as The Czech Republic. The Czech Republic is a European Country and is completely surrounded by other countries, which means it has no ports of sea. The Czech Republic shares borders with Poland, Germany, Austria, and Slovakia. The Czech Republic is a member of NATO (since 1999); and the European Union. As of January 1, 2009, the Czech Republic holds the EU Presidency. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw Pact troops ended the efforts of the country's leaders to liberalize Communist party rule and create "socialism with a human face." Anti-Soviet demonstrations the following year ushered in a period of harsh repression. With the collapse of Soviet authority in 1989, Czechoslovakia regained its freedom through a peaceful "Velvet Revolution." On 1 January 1993, the country underwent a "velvet divorce" into its two national components, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic made economic reforms such as fast privatization and flat tax. Annual gross domestic product growth has recently been around 6%. The country is the first former member of the Com econ to achieve the status of a developed country (2006) according to the World Bank. The Czech Republic also ranks best compared to the former Com econ countries in the Human Development Index. The capital city of Prague has been the back drop of many American Films along with other historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia, as well as parts of Silesia.
