Macedonia

Macedonia - Is officially known as The Republic of Macedonia. Macedonia is a European Country and is completely surrounded by other countries, which means it has no ports of sea. Macedonia shares borders with Serbia, Kosovo (which is disputed), Albania, Greece, and Bulgaria. Macedonia gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Macedonia was admitted to the United Nations in 1993 under the provisional reference the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia pending resolution of a naming dispute with Greece. The United States began referring to Macedonia by its constitutional name, Republic of Macedonia, in 2004 and negotiations continue between Greece and Macedonia to resolve the name issue. After 1996 the country's Gross Domestic Product rose each year through 2000 and shrank to 4.5% during a civil conflict rising back to just over 5% in 2007. The first recorded states on the territory of today's Republic of Macedonia was the kingdom of Paionia, which covered the northern and eastern regions of the Axius River valley and the kingdom of Macedon which occupied the Lyncestis and Pelagonia regions. Philip II of Macedon took over the southernmost regions of Paeonia in 336 BC.
