Belarus

Belarus - Is officially called the Union of Russia and Belarus. Belarus is a European Country and is completely surrounded by other countries, meaning it has no ports of sea. Belarus shares borders with Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Belarus attained its independence in 1991 after seven decades as a constituent republic of the USSR. Belarus and Russia signed a treaty on a two-state union on 8 December 1999. Government restrictions on freedom of speech and the press, peaceful assembly, and religion still continue. Belarus has had trouble attracting foreign investment. Nevertheless, Gross Domestic Product growth has been strong in recent years, reaching nearly 7% in 2007, despite the roadblocks of a tough, centrally directed economy with a high, but decreasing, rate of inflation. Belarus was first settled by Slavic tribes in the 6th century.
