Albania

Albania - Is officially known as the Republic of Albania. Albania is a European Country and shares borders with Greece, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. After Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1912, it was conquered by Italy in 1939. Albania allied itself first with the USSR (until 1960), and then with China (to 1978). In the early 1990s, Albania ended 46 years of Communist rule and established a multiparty democracy. Now Albania is a potential candidate for membership in the European Union and also received a NATO membership invitation in 2008. Although Albania's economy continues to grow, the country is still one of the poorest in Europe, hampered by a large informal economy and an inadequate energy and transportation infrastructure. The completion of a new thermal power plant near Vlore and improved transmission line between Albania and Montenegro will help relieve the energy shortages. Albania has been populated since prehistoric times. In antiquity, much of it was settled by the ancient Illyrians, possible ancestors of Albanians. Archaeological research shows that Albania has been populated since the Paleolithic Age. Greeks, Romans, Venetians and Ottomans swept through, leaving their cultural mark as well as their ruins.
